Separate fabric weight from cleaning performance.

GSM describes fabric mass per unit area; it is not an absorbency rating. Compare a cloth using its fiber declaration, construction, finished size and edge as well as weight. Water absorbency needs its own assessment. For your brief, identify the surface and cleaning method, then agree what to check on a sample.

Does a higher GSM prove better absorbency?

No. GSM and absorbency describe different properties. Specify the desired fabric weight separately from the absorbency method and acceptance criteria you want reviewed. No absorbency result is claimed for an untested sample.

What should I compare on a reference cloth?

Record its size, declared composition, knit or weave, pile and edge treatment. Add the intended surface, cleaning solution and wet or dry method so the comparison has a defined use.

What belongs in a private-label cloth brief?

Include colors, quantity by color, label position, pieces per pack and your artwork. If washing matters to the use, add the wash and drying routine to the sample-review request.
